Protection of river banks, river courses, and earth slope restoration
These are cylindrical structures composed of a net of coconut or polypropylene multi-fibres, highly resistant to the action of water, filled with highly compacted coconut fibre and available in diameters of 30, 40 or 50cm and in either 3 or 6m lengths.
Biologs can be deployed basically for the protection of the banks of river courses or as supporting walls in the process of earth bank construction or restoration. They are recommended for use in areas subject to acute or very acute erosion conditions (i.e. where the water flow reaches speeds of 1,5 to 2,5m/s over gradients of 1/3 or 1/2).
These types of structure, which contain vegetation with a highly developed root system as in the case of aquatic plants, play an important role in assuring the successful outcome of a restoration projects, making it necessary to cultivate these structures initially in a nursery with plants suited to the project in question, with the aim of giving them the maximum strength and vitality when placed in situ.
